In December (I think that's when it was), I mentioned that I was going to try turning my poinsettia plant into a bonsai. I thought I'd give a little update here. I'm proud of how well the little thing is responding to its training. The leaves have miniaturized well (my accidentally starting to miniaturize them was what gave me the idea to train it in the first place) and it is no longer even trying to produce the bigger leaves. |
Deciding on the right bonsai style for the stem structure took me most of these past 4 months to figure out, but I think I can now see how to prune and wire it into a semi-traditional bonsai style. I'll take several more weeks to study the plant and make sure that what I have in mind is what I want to commit to before doing anything irreversible (I will need to do some drastic pruning to get it into the proper shape), but I'm pretty sure I can get that plant into a good looking bonsai within the next several years. I wasn't so sure a few months ago.
Hmm, now that I'm thinking more about it, I should get it out of the pot and check the root structure (and then give it time to recover from having its roots manhandled) before I mess with its stems.
